Solana Cuts Slot Time to 350ms as Alpenglow Overhaul Nears

Solana cut its mainnet slot time to 350ms via SIMD-0525 as the Alpenglow consensus overhaul, targeting roughly 150ms finality, nears a 2026 rollout.

Solana cut its mainnet slot time from 400 to 350 milliseconds in late August 2026 under proposal SIMD-0525, a first step toward a 200ms target, The Block reported. The change lands as Alpenglow — described as the biggest consensus overhaul in Solana’s history, aiming for roughly 150ms finality — moves through testing toward a rollout later this year.

What happened?

Validators activated a reduction in Solana’s block cadence, lowering the target slot time to 350 milliseconds from 400, The Block reported. The change stems from SIMD-0525, whose rationale is that “shorter slots reduce confirmation and finalization latency for users.” It is the first of four planned 50ms reductions; the next step targets 300ms, with no activation date set, and the ultimate goal is 200ms. The mechanism can be paused if validators fail to produce blocks during their assigned slots.

Slot time governs how frequently the network produces blocks, and is distinct from finality — the point at which a transaction is irreversible. That is where the larger Alpenglow upgrade comes in. CoinDesk reported that Alpenglow went live on a community test cluster on May 11, 2026, calling it the biggest consensus overhaul in Solana’s history. Alpenglow replaces the network’s existing TowerBFT and Proof-of-History machinery with two new components, Votor and Rotor, and targets finality of about 150 milliseconds versus roughly 12.8 seconds today, per The Block and CoinDesk.

Why does it matter?

Speed and finality are Solana’s core pitch to payments, trading and consumer apps, where multi-second settlement is a real friction. Trimming slot time is an incremental, low-risk win that ships now; Alpenglow is the structural change that could compress finality by orders of magnitude. Development firm Anza, the Solana Labs spinout behind Alpenglow, and co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko have framed the overhaul as foundational, and the proposal earned overwhelming validator backing — 98.27% of participating stake voted to approve it in a September 2025 governance vote, per CoinDesk.

The staged approach matters too. Rather than flip a single switch, Solana is shipping small, reversible slot-time cuts while testing the harder consensus rewrite separately. That reduces the risk of a disruptive change to a network that has, in the past, suffered outages. For more altcoin protocol coverage, see our altcoins hub.

What is Alpenglow, briefly?

Alpenglow is a redesign of how Solana validators agree on the state of the chain. Votor is a lightweight voting protocol that can finalize blocks in one or two rounds depending on participation; Rotor handles faster block propagation using optimized broadcasting with erasure coding, per CoinDesk and Decrypt. Together they aim to cut finality from over 12 seconds toward roughly 150 milliseconds. As of the reporting, Alpenglow remained in testing and had not yet activated on mainnet.

Slot time vs. finality: what is changing?

It helps to separate the two metrics Solana is working on. Slot time is how often the network mints a block; finality is when a transaction can no longer be reversed. SIMD-0525 addresses the first with incremental cuts, while Alpenglow addresses the second with a new consensus design. The contrast, drawn from The Block and CoinDesk reporting:

Metric Before Target Vehicle
Slot (block) time 400 ms 350 ms now, then 300 and 200 ms SIMD-0525 (staged 50 ms cuts)
Full finality ~12.8 seconds ~150 ms Alpenglow (Votor + Rotor)

The slot-time cuts are deliberately conservative and reversible: The Block reported the mechanism can be paused if validators fail to produce blocks during their assigned slots, and no date has been set for the next step to 300ms. That staging lets the network capture latency improvements now without betting everything on the larger consensus rewrite landing on schedule.

What to watch next

Watch for the next slot-time reduction to 300ms, then 200ms, and whether validators sustain block production at the faster cadence without pauses. On Alpenglow, the key milestone is mainnet activation: CoinDesk reported Yakovenko suggested it could arrive as soon as the following quarter if testing went smoothly, while Anza economist Max Resnick pointed to late Q3 or early Q4 2026 — timelines that, as the teams themselves note, could shift during testing. These are engineering milestones to track, not predictions about SOL’s price.
