US spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds shed roughly $679 million in net outflows over the trading week of October 5-9, 2026, ending three straight weeks of inflows, according to data from The Defiant and SoSoValue cited by multiple outlets. The heaviest single-day selling landed on October 7, the largest daily Bitcoin ETF outflow since late June.

How big were the weekly outflows?

The Defiant reported that US spot Bitcoin ETFs saw net outflows of $678.9 million from October 5 to October 9, a figure repeated in a KuCoin news flash. A separate tally based on SoSoValue data put the weekly total near $681 million, ending three consecutive weeks of net inflows. The small gap between the figures reflects different data providers, but both point to the same reversal after a stronger stretch in September and early October. Ether ETFs fared worse in dollar terms, with roughly $1.2 billion in combined net outflows over the same week, per SoSoValue figures relayed by DigitalToday. The outflows coincided with a softening in Bitcoin’s spot price and broke what had been a constructive stretch for the funds, though a single week of redemptions is modest set against the tens of billions of dollars the products have absorbed since launch.

Which days drove the selling?

The bulk of the redemptions came midweek. Cointelegraph, citing Farside Investors, reported that Bitcoin ETFs recorded $484.9 million in net outflows on Wednesday, October 7 — the largest daily outflow since June 25 — followed by $244.1 million on Thursday, October 8. The week was not uniformly negative: October 6 saw net inflows of about $119 million before the selling accelerated, and the Monday session opened with a smaller outflow of roughly $90 million. The pattern mirrored a broader pullback in Bitcoin’s spot price, which one account said slipped from about $86,480 at the start of the week toward roughly $82,500 as the outflows mounted. Cointelegraph’s running tally put October-to-date net Bitcoin ETF outflows at about $407 million as of October 9, with Ether ETFs down a larger $579 million for the month.

Which funds saw the most redemptions?

According to KuCoin’s summary of the week, BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) and Fidelity’s Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund (FBTC) — the two largest US spot Bitcoin ETFs by assets — accounted for much of the selling. Flow data cited in daily coverage put IBIT’s October 7 net outflow among the heaviest for the session, at more than $200 million, with FBTC leading redemptions the following day. Because the two funds dominate the category’s assets, their daily swings tend to set the direction for the aggregate numbers, and a single large redemption day from either can tip an otherwise balanced week into net outflows. The broader group of US spot Bitcoin ETFs, launched in January 2024, now manages on the order of $105 billion.

How did the month begin?

The outflow week followed a firmer start to October. US spot Bitcoin ETFs absorbed a net $134.4 million over the first two trading sessions of the month, reversing a $148.7 million outflow on September 30 that had ended a nine-session inflow streak, according to figures reported by IDN Financials. BlackRock’s IBIT led the October 1 session with inflows of about $195.6 million. That early strength faded as prices rolled over, setting up the sharper redemptions seen from October 5 onward.

How does this compare with recent weeks?

The outflow week broke a run of positive flows. US spot Bitcoin ETFs had taken in about $241 million in the week ending October 2, their third straight week of inflows, after absorbing roughly $2.65 billion across September — one of the strongest monthly hauls since late 2025, according to reporting aggregated from SoSoValue. The October 5-9 reversal therefore marked a shift in short-term demand rather than a sustained trend, with daily flows turning positive again on the final session of the week, when about $21 million flowed in on October 9.

What does it mean for 2026 cumulative flows?

Even after the outflow week, cumulative 2026 net flows into US spot Bitcoin ETFs remained positive on SoSoValue’s tally through October 9, according to DigitalToday, though a separate calculation put the year-to-date figure lower, at a few hundred million dollars. Since their January 2024 launch, the funds have drawn tens of billions of dollars on a net basis and hold roughly $105 billion in assets. Spot Bitcoin ETFs have become one of the main channels through which traditional investors gain Bitcoin exposure, so sustained inflows or outflows are often read as a signal of institutional appetite. Analysts caution, however, that daily and weekly flow data can be noisy, is frequently revised by data providers, and does not establish causation with price moves.
